What is Zirgan?
Zirgan is prescribed to treat herpes infections in the eye. While It is not a cure, it can prevent the growth of the virus. Treating outbreaks can reduce the risk of decreased vision or even blindness. This will only manage viruses and cannot treat eye infections caused by bacteria. Using this product when it is not necessary can decrease the effectiveness of the drug when it is needed.
Zirgan Gel Information
The usual dose is 5 times per day, every 3 hours while awake, until the outbreak and corneal ulcer heals. Your dose is then reduced to 3 drops a day for 7 extra days.
Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the product. Avoid touching the dropper or let it touch surfaces to prevent contamination of the product. If you wear contact lenses, remove them at the onset of the infection and keep them off during treatment. Sanitize them as recommended by the manufacturer and call your doctor before wearing them.
To use the drops, tilt your head back and pull your lower eyelid to form a pocket. Hold the dropper above your eye (without touching it) and place a single drop in the pocket. Carefully close your eyes and use your finger to apply pressure to the corner of your eye closest to your nose. This prevents the drops from leaking.
Try to avoid rubbing your eyes or blinking for about 2 minutes. Repeat these steps as often as prescribed and on your other eye if needed. If you notice that your vision is unclear immediately after treatment, do not drive or operate machinery until your vision returns to normal.
Wait at least 5 minutes before using a different eye drop. Once finished, you can simply replace the dropper cap without needing to rinse it. Remember to use this properly every day to experience the best results. Call your doctor if you do not see an improvement or if the infection worsens.
Zirgan Gel is an antiviral medication used to stop the herpes virus from replicating. The virus will still be present in the body in between outbreaks. Treating the infection will help to heal the sores in the eye before they can cause permanent damage.
