What is Vetmedin used for?
Vetmedin (pimobendan) chewable tablet is for veterinary use only. It contains the active ingredient pimobendan which is used to treat congestive heart failure caused by mitral valve disease and dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. It is often taken before meals with doses 12 hours apart.
It works by dilating blood vessels carrying blood to and from the heart thereby reducing the workload of the heart. It also increases the strength and efficiency of the dog’s heartbeat and improves the heart’s pumping action.
Some side effects of Vetmedin are vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and poor appetite. The safety of Vetmedin is unknown if your dog is breeding, pregnant or lactating. Vetmedin has not been established to be safe in dogs that are under 6 months of age.
