What is Movantik used for?
Movantik (naloxegol) works by binding to and blocking the mu-opioid receptors in the gastrointestinal tract. It is used to treat opioid induced constipation (OIC) in adults with chronic non cancer pain. Patients receiving methadone are more likely to experience abdominal pain and similar gastrointestinal adverse reactions.
It is taken on an empty stomach by mouth. Carefully read the medication guide prior to starting treatment. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. They need to determine if it is safe to use movantik during pregnancy.
Provide your doctor with a list of your current medicines to check for drug interaction, including prescription medicines ,vitamins/herbal products and over-the-counter medicines/vitamins.
Some side effects of Movantik are abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, flatulence and headache. Symptoms of opioid withdrawal can occur in some persons taking Movantik. Such symptoms are anxiety, irritability, and yawning. call your doctor or pharmacist if side effects are difficult to manage or your medical condition worsens.
