    Celexa (Citalopram) Information

    How to use Celexa (Citalopram)?

Always read and understand the patient information guide provided with the product before you begin taking Citalopram. When you buy Citalopram online from Your Canada Drug Store, we always send the products in the manufacturer’s packaging.

Citalopram is taken by mouth usually once daily. It should be taken at the same time each day either in the morning or evening. Citalopram is usually started at a low dose and gradually increased until the required dose is achieved.

It may take up to 4 weeks to feel the full benefit of Citalopram. Do not stop taking it unless advised to do so by your doctor as some conditions may worsen when this is stopped suddenly. Do not take this within 2 weeks after using MAO inhibitors.

Alcohol should be avoided while taking Citalopram as this can increase the risk of drowsiness. Other drugs that cause drowsiness such as antihistamines (cetirizine, chlorpheniramine, diphenhydramine), muscle relaxants, opioid pain relievers (codeine) and anti-anxiety medications (alprazolam, diazepam) should also be avoided.

Citalopram can cause serotonin syndrome when taken with other drugs that also increase serotonin levels such as other antidepressants (fluoxetine, paroxetine, venlafaxine, duloxetine). Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant. They need to determine if this passes into breast milk.

This may cause heart rate changes such as QT prolongation. If you have a recent heart attack, heart failure or history of slow heart rate, this may not be an appropriate medication for you. Call your doctor or pharmacist if you experience suicidal thoughts or behaviours.

What are the drug interactions with Celexa (Citalopram)?

The following drugs are known to interact with Citalopram. This is not an exhaustive list of all possible drug interactions. It is important to disclose all your current medications, (including prescription medications and herbal products) with your doctor to prevent allergic reactions or adverse interactions. They may have to determine if the interaction is worth the benefit of using both drugs or if your therapeutic plan needs to be changed.
