Zelboraf (active ingredient: vemurafenib) is a cancer medication that interferes with the spread and growth of cancer cells within the body. 

Zelboraf is prescribed to treat skin cancer (melanoma) that has spread to other parts of the body or cannot be surgically removed. 

Zelboraf is also used in the treatment for Erdheim-Chester Disease which is a rare form of blood cancer. 

Zelboraf will be prescribed only if your cancer has a specific genetic marker known as an abnormal “BRAF” gene. Your doctor will perform a test for this gene.

Take Zelboraf as it is prescribed to you by your doctor. Ensure you follow all directions on the prescription label exactly. Do not take Zelboraf more or less often, or for longer than recommended. 

Take Zelboraf with a full cup of water. You might take this medication either with or without food. 

Take the medication every 12 hours, at the same time daily to help you remember.

  • Increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight

  • Itching or skin rash

  • Lump or growth on the skin
  • Nausea 
  • Pain in the ankles or knees
  • Painful, red lumps under the skin, mostly on the legs
  • Paralysis of the nerves
  • Rapid weight gain
  • Rash with flat lesions or small raised lesions on the skin
  • Red skin lesions, often with a purple center
  • Red, irritated eyes
  • Redness or other discoloration of the skin
  • Redness, soreness, swelling, or itching of the skin
  • Scaling of the skin on the hands and feet
  • Sensitivity of the eye to light
  • Severe sunburn

There are some side effects of Zelboraf that might occur which don’t usually require medical attention. These milder side effects will usually subside as your body adjusts to the medication, your doctor may also be able to help you avoid these less serious side effects.
