Vraylar (Cariprazine)

Vraylar is to be taken once daily, and can be consumed with or without food. Remember that it could take a few weeks before you notice any improvement in your symptoms. Continue to take the medication as directed, and consult with your healthcare professional if no improvement is noticed.

Always adhere to the prescribed dosage and instructions on the prescription label as well as any additional medication guides or sheets. Your healthcare provider may adjust your dosage from time to time.

High doses or long-term usage of Vraylar can induce a serious movement disorder that may be irreversible. Older adults are at a greater risk for this disorder. If you experience symptoms such as tremors or uncontrollable muscle movements, inform your doctor immediately.

Routine checks on your blood pressure and heart rate are necessary, as well as periodic blood tests. Vraylar is available in 1.5 mg, 3 mg, 4.5 mg, and 6 mg capsules.

Vraylar is believed to regulate serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain. It does so by exhibiting partial agonist activity at central dopamine D₂ and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors and antagonist activity at serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. Vraylar is classified as an atypical antipsychotic medication.

Vraylar is used for the treatment of:

• Schizophrenia
• Acute manic and mixed episodes associated with bipolar I
• Depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder (bipolar depression)
• Major depressive disorder (MDD) as an add-on treatment with an antidepressant therapy (ADT).

Vraylar should not be used if you have an allergy to cariprazine. It is not approved for anyone under 18 years old and is not recommended for older adults with dementia-related psychosis due to potential risk of death.

Before starting on Vraylar, it's important to disclose any existing health issues such as heart disease, high blood pressure, a history of stroke or blood clot, elevated cholesterol or triglyceride levels, liver or kidney disease, diabetes or high blood sugar, low white blood cell count, seizures, or dehydration.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or become pregnant while taking Vraylar, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms in newborns if taken in the third trimester. It's also advisable to discuss any risks associated with breastfeeding while on this medication.

Vraylar may interfere with the body’s ability to regulate core body temperature. Extreme physical activity, exposure to high temperatures, dehydration, and anticholinergic medications can cause an increase in body temperature. Use Vraylar with caution in these scenarios.

Common Vraylar side effects include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, constipation, fatigue, insomnia, increased appetite, dizziness, involuntary muscle movements, restlessness, upset stomach, difficulty moving, or slow movements. Weight gain may also occur, so it is recommended to monitor your weight throughout treatment.

Emergency medical attention should be sought if there are signs of an allergic reaction to Vraylar, such as hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your healthcare provider if you experience sudden numbness or weakness, problems with vision or speech, lightheadedness, distress or agitation, seizures, uncontrolled muscle movements, trouble swallowing, or symptoms of high blood sugar or severe nervous system reaction.

Vraylar's effects can last for weeks even after stopping usage, and new side effects may emerge when changing doses. If side effects persist or worsen, seek medical advice immediately.
