    What is Viokace used for?

Viokace is used in combination with a proton pump inhibitor medication to treat individuals who cannot digest food properly. The pancreas is an organ in the body that normally produces enzymes to assist you in digesting food. There are certain conditions such as chronic pancreatitis or surgical removal of part of or the whole pancreas that can decrease the production or release of these enzymes into the bowels. Pancrelipase (the active ingredient contained in Viokace) contains a mixture of digestive enzymes (from pig pancreas) to assist in breaking down and disgesting fast, proteins, and starches from food.

    Viokace Information

    How to Use Viokace?

Read and follow the medication guide and patient information leaflets provided by the pharmacy before you start taking Viokace and every time you get this medication refilled. Always make sure you’re closely following the directions on your prescription label and ask your doctor before changing how you take this medication.

Do not crush, split, or chew the tablets; do not hold them in your mouth. This can irritate your mouth and throat as well as affect how the medication works. Unless instructed otherwise, drink plenty of fluids while taking Viokace. The dose will be based on your diet, weight, medical condition, and response to treatment. Do not take more tablets than prescribed by your doctor; this will not help your condition improve faster and is likely to increase your risk of negative side effects.

Your doctor will likely prescribe another medication (a proton pump inhibitor like omeprazole or lansoprazole) to decrease your stomach acid. This will help prevent Viokace from breaking down in your stomach which will help it work better. Use Viokace regularly and follow any diet advice from your doctor or nutritionist.
