What is Steglujan used for?

Steglujan is contains both ertugliflozin and sitagliptin. It is used along with exercise and diet to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. Steglujan should not be prescribed for type 1 diabetes. It is also not for people with diabetic ketoacidosis.

How to Use Steglujan?

Take Steglujan exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication orally once per day in the morning, with or without food.

If needed, your doctor might adjust your dose. If you forget a dose take it as soon as you remember.

If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at your regularly scheduled time.

Do not double up on doses of Steglujan to catch up. Your doctor may prescribe Steglujan along with other diabetes medications.

The likelihood of low blood sugar increases when you’re prescribed Steglujan with other medications. Ensure you stay on the prescribed diet and exercise programs from your doctor while on Steglujan.

Steglujan Drug Interactions

Drug Interactions may interfere with how your medications work or leave you at an increased risk of side effects. In some cases you should never take two drugs that interact with each other. What are side effects of Steglujan?

Steglujan may cause serious side effects including Ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is caused by increased ketones in your urine or blood. Stop taking Steglujan and notify your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms of Ketoacidosis:

  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Tiredness
  • Nausea
  • Trouble breathing

Serious urinary tract infections have been reported in people taking Steglujan. If you have any signs or symptoms of a UTI talk to your doctor including:

  • The urgent need to urinate
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Burning feeling passing urine
  • Back pain
  • Blood in the urine
  • Pelvic pain
  • Frequent urination

Steglujan can increase your risk of lower limb amputations. They mainly involve the removal of the toe. You might be at a higher risk for lower limb amputations if you:

  • Have a history of amputation
  • Have nerve damage
  • Have had diabetic foot sores or ulcers
  • Have narrowed or blocked blood vessels in the legs

If you have any sores, infections or ulcers in your leg or foot as well as new pain or tenderness, call your doctor right away. Your doctor may decide to take you off of Steglujan.

If you take Steglujan with another medication that can cause low blood sugar, you increase your risk of getting low blood sugar. Your doctor may adjust your dosage accordingly. Signs and symptoms of low blood sugar are:

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Headahce
  • Hunger
  • Irritability
  • Feeling shaky or jittery
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Weakness
  • Drowsiness

You may experience necrotizing fasciitis in the perineum (area around the genitals and anus). This has happened in men and women taking medications that lower the blood sugar in the same was Steglujan does. Necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum may lead to hospitalization, can lead to death, or require multiple surgeries.

If you have a fever or you are feeling tired, uncomfortable, or very weak, and have the following symptoms in the perineum, seek immediate medical attention:

  • Swelling
  • Redness of the skin
  • Pain or tenderness

These effects are all relatively rare and you’re unlikely to encounter them. The more likely effects of Steglujan include:

  • Penile or vaginal yeast infections
  • Needing to urinate more often, in larger amounts, or at night
  • Urgent need to urinate
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Upper respiratory infection
  • Upset stomach
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Swelling of the legs and hands
