Never disregard or delay in seeking medical advice because of the information provided here.
Antidepressant medications can be used for the treatment of a wide variety of mental/mood disorders including depression. These drugs can help prevent suicidal ideations/attempts and provide other crucial benefits. Studies have shown, however, that a small number of people (especially those younger than 25) who are prescribed antidepressants for any reason might experience worsening depression, other mood/mental symptoms or increased suicidal tendencies.
Therefore, it’s very important to discuss and weigh out the risks and benefits of antidepressants with your doctor even if you’re not prescribed the antidepressant for a mental/mood condition. If you notice worsening depression/other psychiatric conditions, new/worsening, anxiety, trouble sleeping, unusual behaviour changes or any other mental/mood changes talk to your doctor as soon as possible.
Watch for these symptoms closely when you start a new antidepressant or when you change your dose. Parnate might rarely cause an incident of extremely high blood pressure (hypertensive crisis) which can be fatal. There are many drug interactions that can increase this risk. Any food and drink containing tyramine can also increase this risk. Check your blood pressure regularly and let your doctor/pharmacist know about all products you take before starting tranylcypromine.
Parnate (tranylcypromine) is an antidepressant. Parnate treats depression by restoring the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain. Tranylcypromine can improve your mood and general mental state. It is usually used in those who have not responded to treatment with other drugs.
Always read the medication information given when you start Parnate and when you get a refill. If you have any questions discuss them with your doctor and pharmacist. Take tranylcypromine orally as directed by your doctor, usually in divided doses. Parnate can be taken with or without food. Your dose will be based on your response to treatment and medical condition but will usually stay under 60 mg daily.
In order to reduce your risk of negative side effects, your doctor can start you off at a low dose and gradually increase it. Once your condition improves and stays better for a while, your doctor may work with you to reduce your regular dose. Always follow your doctor’s dosing plan very carefully.
If you take more Parnate or take it more often than instructed your risk of side effects will increase, your condition will not improve faster. In order to help you remember, use it on a consistent schedule. If you stop this medication suddenly you may experience withdrawal symptoms, especially if you have been using the medication regularly in high doses. If you want to get off Parnate your doctor will help you do so safely. Talk to your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
Drug interactions can affect how your medications function and may increase your risk of serious side effects. This is not an exhaustive list of all possible interactions. Keep a list of the medications (prescription, non-prescription, and herbal products) that you use and make sure your doctor(s) know about all of them so you can safely avoid interactions. Do not tamper with how you take your medications without first talking to your doctor.
Some products that may interact with Parnate are:
- Amitriptyline (Elavil)
- Atomoxetine (Strattera)
- Bupropion (Wellbutrin)
- Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
- Atenolol (Tenormin)
- Phenelzine (Nardil)

- Selegiline (Eldepryl)

If you take other drugs that increase serotonin (street drugs like MDMA, St. John’s wort, other antidepressants etc.) you risk serotonin syndrome/toxicity. The risk of serotonin syndrome/toxicity can be more likely when you start or increase the dose of these medications.
If you have taken fluoxetine during the 5 weeks before starting Parnate talk to your doctor. Also tell them about any products that cause drowsiness such as: opioid pain or cough relievers, alcohol, cannabis, sleep or anxiety medications, or antihistimines.
Look at the labels on all your medications as they may contain dextromethorphan, stimulants, decongestants or other drowsiness causing ingredients. It is essential to limit the amount of tyramine in your diet while on Parnate. You should avoid consuming large amounts of caffeine as this can increase the chance of Parnate side effects.
