Nitrostat (nitroglycerin) is a nitrate. It dilates blood vessels which makes it easier for blood to flow through them and also makes it easier for the heart to pump.

Nitrostat is used in the treatment of a kind of chest pain called angina.

Angina is discomfort or pain that keeps coming back when your heart doesn’t get enough blood. Angina feels like a squeezing or pressing pain, usually in your chest under the breastbone. Sometimes, you can feel it in your shoulders, neck, back, jaws, or arms. Nitrostat can help to relieve this pain.

Nitroglycerin is available as two different products that are used for different reasons. This information is for the sublingual tablets which are fast acting to stop an angina attack that has already started. They can also be used to prevent angina if you anticipate a stressful event or are planning to exercise.

When you feel an angina attack starting (tightness, or squeezing in the chest, chest pain), sit down. Place a sublingual tablet in your mouth or under your tongue. Soon after using the tablet you may become lightheaded or dizzy, it is safer to sit while the medication is working. If while sitting you faint or become dizzy, take several deep breaths and bend forward, with your head between your knees. You will feel better in a few minutes, remain calm.

Nitrostat sublingual tablets shouldn’t be crushed, swallowed, or chewed. They work faster when absorbed through the lining of the mouth. Place the tablet either between your cheek and gum or under your tongue and let it dissolve. Don’t eat or drink anything, smoke, or use chewing tobacco while the tablet dissolves.

Nitrostat sublingual tablets generally provide relief in 1-5 minutes. If the pain is not relieved after 5 minutes you may use a second tablet. If the pain continues for 5 more minutes, you can use a third tablet. If you continue experiencing pain after 3 tablets have been used, go to an emergency room or contact your doctor immediately. Do not drive yourself, contact 911 if necessary.

Drug interactions may affect how Nitrostat works or can increase your risk of side effects. Some interactions are highly serious and must be avoided completely. Others can be avoided with your doctor taking precautions such as changing the doses or timing of the drugs that interact.
