If you have severe heart failure that makes you short of breath while resting or during light activity do not take this medication. If you have a certain kind of irregular heartbeat (permanent atrial fibrillation) that will not or cannot be changed back to a normal heart rhythm do not take this medication. Dronedarone can increase risk of stroke, death, or the need to be treated for heart failure if you have these conditions. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. If you have new or worsening symptoms of heart failure such as swelling feet/ankles, unusual tiredness, breath, sudden/unusual weight gain.
If you have had certain kind of irregular heartbeat but have a normal rhythm now this medication is used. It assists in maintaining a normal heart rhythm and lowers chances of having to go to a hospital for atrial fibrillation. Dronedarone is an antiarrhythmic drug. If you have permanent atrial fibrillation you should not take this drug because of the risk of serious side effects.
Take Multaq by mouth with food as instructed by your doctor, generally twice per day. Avoid grapefruits and grapefruit juice while on this medication unless your doctor has advised it is safe as grapefruit can increase the chance of side effects. To gain the most benefit from this medication take it regularly. Do not adjust how you take dronedarone even if you feel well. Your doctor may instruct you to take an additional medication to lower the risk of getting blood clots, carefully follow your doctor’s instructions. If your heartbeat or pulse becomes irregular or fast get medical help immediately.
Nausea and diarrhea are normal side effects, if they persist or worsen tell your doctor immediately. Your doctor has considered the risks/benefits and prescribed this medication as they have determined the benefits outweigh the side effects. Many people on this medication never experience serious side effects. If you have any of these serious side effects talk to your doctor promptly: appetite, abdominal/stomach pain, symptoms of liver disease, signs of kidney problems.
If you have any very serious side effects get medical help right away: severe dizziness, fast/irregular/slow heartbeat, fainting. Serious allergic reactions to this drug are rare, however if you notice any of the following symptoms including: swelling/itching, rash, trouble breathing, severe dizziness. This list of side effects is incomplete, if you notice other symptoms talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you have as this product may have inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions. Also discuss your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist before using this medication especially of: certain types of irregular heartbeat, liver disease, serious side effects from taking amiodarone.
QT prolongation can occasionally cause very serious (but rarely fatal) irregular/fast heartbeat and other symptoms (such as fainting or severe dizziness) that need immediate medical attention. QT prolongation risk might be increased if you have certain conditions or are taking drugs that may cause QT prolongation. Before you use dronedarone tell your pharmacist or doctor about all the medications you take and if you have any of these conditions: family history of heart problems, if you have certain heart problems. Low magnesium and potassium levels in the blood may increase the risk of QT prolongation.
If you use diuretics this risk can increase or if you have conditions such as diarrhea, sweating, or vomiting. Talk to your doctor about safe use of dronedarone. Discuss all the products you use with your doctor or dentist before having surgery. Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects of dronedarone especially QT prolongation. This medication is not safe to use during pregnancy, it can harm a fetus. Discuss reliable birth control with your doctor. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk, and breast-feeding is not recommended while on this medication.
Drug interactions can increase risk of serious side effects and may change how your medication works. This is not an exhaustive description of all interactions, share a list of all the products you use with your pharmacist/doctor before starting this medication. Do not adjust your usage of this medication without first consulting your doctor. Fingolimod may interact with this product. Many drugs aside from dronedarone can affect the heart rhythm.
Examples include: disopyramide, amiodarone, dofetilide, pimozide, flecainide, propafenone, procainamide, solatol, quinidine among others. Other drugs can affect the removal of dronedarone from your system which can affect how dronedarone works including: cyclosporine, azole antifungals, macrolide antibiotics, HIV protease inhibitors, rifampin, nefazodone, telithromycin, St. John’s wort, drugs to treat seizures among others. Dronedarone can delay removal of other drugs from your system which can affect how they work such as: digoxin and dabigatran among others.
If someone is experiencing trouble breathing or has passed out they may have overdosed, call 911 immediately or poison control.
This medication is not to be shared. Medical/laboratory tests should be performed frequently to monitor your progress and side effects.
If you have missed a dose skip that dose and take the next one at the regular time, never double your doses to catch up.
Store this medication away from moisture and light at room temperature and not in the bathroom. Dispose of this medication as advised by a waste removal company or pharmacist when it is expired or no longer needed.
