What is Mesalamine EC (5-ASA) used for?

Mesalamine Suppositories (5-aminosalicylic acid) is an anti-inflammatory medicine used to treat mild-to-moderate Crohn's disease and mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis. It works by decreasing the inflammation in the colon. Decreased inflammation can lead to less rectal bleeding and less blood and mucus found in stoos. It prevents the body from releasing the natural substances that lead to inflammation.

    How to Use Mesalamine?

Take mesalamine by mouth as directed by your doctor (with or without food, generally 3 times daily) and swallow whole. Mesalamine should not be crushed, broken, or chewed as this can keep the medication from being properly released into the colon.

Your dosage will be determined based on your response to treatment and medical condition. Different brands of mesalamine deliver different quantities of this medication so you shouldn’t switch brands without talking to your doctor first. Take it at the same time daily. If your condition gets worse or you don’t notice any improvement talk to your doctor.

    Mesalamine Drug Interactions

Some medications shouldn’t be used together at all, though there are some cases where two different medications can still be used together even if there is an interaction. In such cases, your doctor may decide to change the dosages or other precautions might be necessary. Let all healthcare providers know about all of the medications you take to avoid negative drug interactions. This list is not exhaustive so always talk to your doctor before starting new medications.

Using mesalamine in combination with any of the following medication is not typically recommended but could be required in some cases. In a situation where both medications are prescribed, your doctor might adjust the dosages or the timing of use for these medications.

    • Mercaptopurine
    • Varicella Virus Vaccine

Mesalamine being used in combination with the following medications can cause an increase in the risk of side effects, but using both medications could be the best treatment for you.
