What is Livalo used for?
Livalo (pitavastatin) is available as both brand and generic which both work in the same way. Pitavastatin is a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor more commonly known as a Statin. It is used in conjunction with diet and exercise in persons with hyperlipidemia or mixed lipidemia to lower elevated total cholesterol levels, decrease LDL cholesterol, decrease triglycerides and increase HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol).
Some common side effects of Livalo are muscle pain, joint pain, back pain, leg/arm pain tenderness or weakness, diarrhea, constipation, headache, flu symptoms and skin rash. If any muscle pain or tenderness (myopathy) or signs of rhabdomyolysis occurs, your doctor should be notified immediately. Persons should have periodic liver function tests and liver enzyme testing while taking livalo. They may have an increased risk of worsening kidney disease.
Provide your doctor or pharmacist a list of your prescription drugs to avoid an allergic reaction or drug interactions. Call your healthcare professional if you experience an allergic reaction. The product should also come with a complete list of warnings and precautions and the adverse reactions reported. It is not currently known if the medicine passes into breast milk.
