What is Lialda used for?
Lialda contains the active ingredient mesalamine which is an aminosalicylate. It is an anti-inflammatory agent used for the treatment of proctitis and helps to maintain remission in persons with mild to moderate ulcerative colitis.
Symptoms of ulcerative colitis include diarrhea, rectal bleeding and stomach pain. Lialda works locally in the colon by blocking cyclooxygenase and inhibiting prostaglandin production thereby reducing inflammation and swelling in the colon. Inform your doctor if you have reduced kidney function or kidney problems as this may make these conditions worse.
Some side effects of Lialda are vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps, gas, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, headache and dizziness. If you miss a dose, you can take it when you remember. If it is almost time for your missed dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your schedule. store at room temperature when not in use.
Before you start treatment, provide a list of your current prescription drugs to check for drug interaction or allergic reaction to Lialda. They will need to weigh the risks and benefits if there are issues with other drugs.
