What is Jadenu?
This medication is used by individuals that have dangerous levels of iron in the blood from frequent blood transfusions. High iron levels may be the result of other medical conditions. Periodic transfusions are common in certain blood conditions such as sickle cell disease. Iron buildup can lead to problems such as diabetes, liver disease and heart disease.
Jadenu Information
Jadenu dosage
The usual dose of Jadenu is one tablet daily by mouth or as often as directed by your doctor. It should be taken on an empty stomach or with a light meal that has less than 250 calories. You may experience side effects if you take this with a meal that's high in fat or calories. Your doctor will advise you on an appropriate meal if that is a convenient way to remember to take your dose.
You should swallow the tablets whole with liquids. If swallowing the tablets is challenging, you can crush the tablets and sprinkle them with applesauce or yogurt. Swallow the mixture immediately and do not prepare doses for later.
Certain over the counter products, including antacids that contain aluminum, may reduce the effectiveness of Jadenu. It may bind to the aluminum leaving iron in the body. Always disclose all the vitamins, minerals and supplements you take to your doctor when including your prescription drug list.
How Jadenu works
The active ingredient, Deferasirox, binds to iron in the body allowing it to be safely removed via stool. It is classified as an iron-chelating agent. Your doctor will tell you the signs and symptoms of chronic iron overload (hemosiderosis). This medication is intended to prevent that condition. It is safe and effective for adults and children 2 years of age and older.
