    How to Use Caverject?

Always take Caverject as recommended by your doctor. Read and follow the information in the patient information leaflet carefully before using Caverject. Your doctor or nurse will show you how to use the injection for at least the first time. Do not inject this yourself until you have learned how to do it correctly.

Your doctor will advise you on the correct Caverject dose to use. Most people only need about 5-20 mcg but some may need a higher or lower dose. You should never use more than 60 mcg at a time. Do not inject more or less of the medication without talking to your doctor first.

Firstly you should ensure your hands are clean and dry before injecting Caverject. The following are the steps for the Caverject kit:

    1. Prepare your injection:
      1. Ensure the vial is the right strength of the medication and that the expiry date has not passed. Check that all protective covers are on the pack properly, if they are not correctly sealed, do not use them and return the pack to your pharmacist. There are 2 needles in the package:
        1. The larger 22 gauge needle with grey at the end is used to mix the caverject powder.
        2. The smaller 30 gauge needle with yellow at the end is used to inject the mixture into the penis.

If a needle is bent it should not be used.

      1. To prepare the vial, flip the plastic cap off the vial. Using one of the wet antiseptic pads wipe off the rubbery top of the vial.
      2. Fit the needle into the syringe by holding the syringe and twisting the white tamper evident cap to break the seal. Take the foil off of the 22 gauge needle and keep the cover on. Join the needle to the syringe by turning the needle clockwise, securing it tightly to the syringe. Remove the needle cover by pushing it away from the syringe with your forefinger and thumb.
      3. Push the needle through the middle of the vial top. Firmly press the plunger down to squirt the solution onto the powder. Gently swirl the vial until the powder is dissolved. If the mixture does not dissolve completely or is cloudy, don’t use it. Never use any liquid other than what’s supplied in the syringe to dissolve the powder.
      4. To fill the syringe turn the vial upside down with the needle still inserted. The needle will support the vial unaided. Make sure that the needle tip is underneath the level of liquid and gently pull the plunger to draw the mixture into the syringe. Pull the needle out of the vial.
      5. Gently twist the larger needle counterclockwise off the syringe. Remove the 30 gauge yellow-tipped needle from the package, keeping the cover on. Twist the needle clockwise tightly onto the syringe and remove the needle cover by pushing it away from the syringe using your thumb and forefinger.
      6. Tap the syringe gently to send air bubbles to the top and push the plunger to squeeze the air bubbles out, ensuring that at least a drop of solution comes out of the needle. Continue pushing until the plunger is at the exact right amount for your dose. Your doctor will show you where that is.
    1. To administer the injection:
      1. Get undressed and get comfortable. You should take some time to relax yourself and your partner. If your prescriber has indicated you should use the second antiseptic pad, open it now.
      2. Ensure the needle is not bent. A bent and re-straightened needle is more likely to break. If the needle breaks and a portion remains in your penis can sometimes require hospitalization and surgical removal.
      3. Take hold of the penis with the first two fingers under near the testicles and the thumb on top. Gently squeeze the penis between your thumb and fingers so the injection site bulges out. If you have your foreskin ensure it is stretched. Your doctor will have shown you the injection site the first time you used Caverject.
      4. If it has been recommended by your prescriber, wipe the skin over the injection site with the second pad and allow it to dry.
      5. Keeping a firm grip on your penis and taking the syringe in your free hand, push the needle through the skin into the bulgy part avoiding veins or obvious blood vessels push the plunger firmly, if the medication does not come out easily, move the needle slightly and try again. Do not force the Caverject liquid out of the syringe.
      6. Pull the needle out and gently press the needle mark with your thumb as recommended by your prescriber. Massage the penis to help spread the Caverject.
      7. Do not keep any of the mixture in the syringe for a second injection.

Ensure your syringe, vial, and needles are disposed of in a safe disposal container such as a sharps bin. Do not use Caverject more than once in a 24 hour period or for more than 3 times per week. Change the side and exact place you inject each time you use Caverject.
