Bactrim (Sulfatrim)

Bactrim should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is available in tablet and liquid form for oral use and it is also available for intravenous use. When taken by mouth, it can cause an upset stomach in some people. If this occurs, it can be taken with food or milk. If you miss a dose, you can take it when you remember. You can skip the missed dose if it's almost time for your next one.

Persons taking Bactrim should drink plenty of fluids to prevent kidney stones from forming. Bactrim is usually prescribed for multiple daily dosing. The doses should be evenly spaced and taken at the same time each day. Sulfatrim can affect some laboratory test results. Always let your healthcare provider know that you are taking sulfatrim when testing you for liver disease, kidney disease and high potassium.

Do not take this if you are allergic to sulphur. Bactrim should be used with caution in person with diabetes as it can affect blood glucose levels. You may be more sensitive to sunburn during treatment. You may wish to wear protective clothing in direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds.

Sulfatrim can cause a rare condition called clostridium difficile diarrhea which is caused by a resistant bacteria. This can occur during treatment or even months after treatment has stopped. Your doctor should be informed immediately if you experience persistent diarrhea, blood or mucus in stool and abdominal pain or cramping.
