Rybelsus® (semaglutide) has a new, improved formulation. Novo Nordisk announced the updated Rybelsus® tablets for the Canadian market on June 9, 2026, following authorization by Health Canada. The redesigned tablets absorb more efficiently, so lower dose strengths — 1.5 mg, 4 mg, and 9 mg — deliver the same clinical results as the original 3 mg, 7 mg, and 14 mg tablets. The new tablets are also physically smaller and easier to swallow.

What Changed in the New Rybelsus® Formulation?
The updated Rybelsus® formulation changes how the tablet is built, not what it treats. Novo Nordisk modified the tablet’s inactive ingredients so the body absorbs semaglutide more efficiently. Because absorption improved, each new tablet contains a lower amount of semaglutide while producing equivalent results. The tablets themselves are smaller and easier to swallow, and the packaging is slimmer.

Why Did Novo Nordisk Update Rybelsus®?
Oral semaglutide is difficult for the body to absorb. The original Rybelsus® formulation had an estimated bioavailability of roughly 0.4–1%. The updated formulation roughly doubles that, to an estimated 1–2%. Health Canada’s authorization was supported by a bioequivalence study in 546 participants. The study confirmed that the new 1.5 mg, 4 mg, and 9 mg tablets provide comparable semaglutide exposure to the original 3 mg, 7 mg, and 14 mg tablets. That means equivalent safety, equivalent efficacy, and the same once-daily administration.
Do I Need to Change My Rybelsus® Dose?
No — and you should never adjust your dose on your own. If you currently take the original formulation, your dose remains correct as prescribed. When your pharmacy transitions to the updated tablets, your doctor or pharmacist will move you to the equivalent new strength. The two formulations are not interchangeable milligram-for-milligram, so the switch must be guided by a healthcare professional. You will continue taking Rybelsus® the same way: once daily, on an empty stomach, with a small sip of plain water, at least 30 minutes before your first food, drink, or other medications.
Is Rybelsus® Being Discontinued?
Rybelsus® is not being discontinued in Canada. In Canada, the Rybelsus® brand continues with the updated 1.5 mg, 4 mg, and 9 mg formulation. In the United States, Novo Nordisk is transitioning the improved oral semaglutide formulation to the Ozempic® brand name, and the Rybelsus® name is being phased out there. The medication itself — oral semaglutide for type 2 diabetes — remains available in both countries. If your U.S. pharmacy tells you Rybelsus® is unavailable, the Canadian-market Rybelsus® remains an option to discuss with your doctor.
